The AI zombie trend, explained
This autumn a short AI video has been going around TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. Someone holds a gun on a zombie. The zombie is the person they love, or their dog. They cannot pull the trigger, they open their arms, and the zombie lunges. Then it flashes back to a sunny memory of the same two together.
People call it the AI zombie trend, the zombie love story or the zombie hug video. The scary part sets up the soft part, so it works with a partner, a parent, a friend or a pet.
Make yoursWho you can make it with
14 seconds, four shots
1 · 0–4 s
The standoff
In a dusty, ruined kitchen you raise the gun at the one you love, hands shaking, tears running.
2 · 4–5 s
It walks closer
Back-lit by the window, they come toward you: white eyes, a low growl, locked on you.
3 · 5–9 s
You let go
You close your eyes, lower the gun and open your arms. They lunge.
4 · 9–14 s
The memory
A white flash cuts to a winter afternoon on green grass: the two of you, healthy, falling down laughing.
Choosing the photos
Photo 1 stays human
It is the survivor with the gun. Photo 2 is the one who turns. Swap them and you become the zombie.
Face forward, nothing in front of it
Sunglasses, masks and strong filters take away the details the model needs to keep the person recognisable.
Bring the clothes into frame
Hair and clothes help the model keep someone recognisable in both the zombie shot and the memory.
One person per photo
A group photo gives the model several faces to choose from.
Questions
Which photo becomes the zombie?
Photo 2. Photo 1 stays human and holds the gun. If you swap them, you are the zombie.
Can I use my dog or cat?
Yes as the one who turns. Use a clear photo of the face. Results with pets vary more than with people.
Will it look exactly like us?
It keeps faces, hair and clothes close to your photos, but AI video is not exact. If a result is off, try again with a sharper photo.
